As a 2018-2019 Cunningham Dance Research Fellow with the New York Pulblic LIbrary, I embarked on research into the pedagogy of Cunningham Technique. Titled Cunningham Technique as a Practice of Freedom, this original research connects the philosophies at the foundation of the work to the classroom practice. I presented the paper at the NYPL Cunningham Dance Research Symposium, Januaru 2019 ; at the American College Dance Association Southeast Regional Conference in March 2019; and at the American Dance Festival in summer 2019. For an overview of the fellowship, visit the NYPL Blog to read my post from February 2019.
This is a continuous research project that examines the philosophical and theoretical perspectives of the Cunningham Technique and how they materialize in the pedagogy. I take an experimental approach to teaching the form, guiding dancers through the technical aspects and sequencing of the traditional class using improvisation and compositional exercises.
